This morning we headed into town for a morning stroll and surprise! There’s aunty Ari sitting in the cafe! The girls were very excited and had no idea. She’s here for a couple of days with her friend Penelope and staying with another friend Shaya. Hugs and kisses all round, then coffee and catching up.
After lunch we all met up again to go fishing. Shaya’s dad is a well known fisherman (he’s Flathead Fred!) their family have been holidaying here for 35 years. Mr Fred sent us off to a good spot, but by the time we got there the wind had whipped up and the rain started falling, so we ran for cover without even getting a line wet.
In the evening we went for a pub dinner, and the girls and I headed home while the big girls settled in for the evening. There’s a bit of a competition between the pub and the bar across the road when it comes to nightlife, so the aim seemed to be to evaluate both thoroughly!

Jonny did his usual early morning walk. He stopped by the Visitor Information Shed on the wharf, too early for it to be open, so he took a photo instead. I stay asleep in the van with the girls. Our morning ritual is Jonny gets up and goes for a walk for an hour, Mischy wakes and either watches a video with the headphones on or writes or draws or reads. Tashi or I wake up next. If I am lucky she will wake me with tentative little pats to the back. Nothing like a pat to wake you up in the morning.

Mallacoota is just like we remember, thankfully! Our camp is well away from the craziness of the foreshore campground (it’s massive, and full), we’re a k or so out of town next to the Shady Gully reserve.
Coastcare are running a series of activities for families over summer and there are a few things here we want to get into. Today we head off to Bastion Point for a rockpool ramble. Jenny and Reece are from Lakes Entrance and are here for a few days to run the activities – they were wonderful folks and really knew their stuff. We found scores of seastars, sea cucumbers, eels, crabs and shells galore.

Early morning is a great time to wander around Merimbula. It’s still and quiet – just me, the fishing hopefuls, a few joggers and dog owners. We’ve quite taken to this place. We thought it might be a bit too holiday crazy, but all in all it’s been a pretty good place to hang out for a week.
